Alginates – the Plant-based Solution for Capsule-free Coffee Capsules

Alginates – the Plant-based Solution for Capsule-free Coffee Capsules

Alginate is a natural polysaccharide extracted from the cell walls of brown algae. These algae are sustainably harvested by local fishermen, particularly along the French Atlantic coast. After processing, alginates are used in a wide range of products, including paper coatings, eco-friendly packaging, and adhesives.

One especially innovative application of alginate can be found in coffee culture. It enables the production of coffee capsules free from aluminium and plastic. This plant-based shell reduces single-use packaging and lowers environmental impact – all without sacrificing the convenience of the familiar capsule system.

CoffeeB: Less Waste, more Coffee Enjoyment

You may have already come across the CoffeeB brand in various supermarkets. Behind it is the Swiss company Delica, which has developed Coffee Balls – a 100 % compostable coffee capsule. The goal: to create a sustainable alternative to the popular coffee capsule system.

This is where our product comes in: alginate. It forms a plant-based protective layer around the pressed coffee, preserving its aroma and completely eliminating the need for aluminium or plastic. If you’ve been disposing of aluminium capsules in the general waste every day, you can now simply throw the fully biodegradable Coffee Balls into your garden compost or organic waste bin – or even use them to fertilise your plants. This creates a natural cycle throughout the entire Coffee Balls value chain, one that you can actively contribute to.

As Easy as Ever

There’s nothing you need to change to enjoy CoffeeB – except treat yourself to a stylish new coffee machine. The system remains just as easy to use: simply insert the Coffee Ball into your machine, press a button, and enjoy fresh coffee. The only difference? What used to be waste is now valuable humus for your garden compost or plant bed.

Alginate – a raw Material with a Future

The success story of CoffeeB highlights the vast potential of alginates. They can be used across a wide range of industries and serve many different functions. In particular, alginate supports the active move away from fossil-based raw materials by providing a sustainable alternative.
