Reducing waste with plant-based cat litter

How can we take simple steps to actively contribute to environmental protection and waste reduction? At the beginning of the year, there was an initial meeting on this topic between J. Rettenmaier & Söhne (JRS) Group and Dr. André Baumann, State Secretary in the Stuttgart Ministry of Environment, Climate, and Energy Economics. Now, the return visit took place at the JRS headquarters in Rosenberg-Holzmühle. State Secretary Dr. Baumann was accompanied by Green politicians from the region, including Mayor Grab from Ellwangen, Mayor Joas from Unterschneidheim, Member of the State Parliament Martin Grath, District Chairpersons Ulrike Richter and Alexander Asbrock, as well as Green County Councilors Gabriele Ceferino and Hubert Thalheimer. They were also interested in learning about the "green" JRS Plant Fiber Technology and its diverse applications on-site.

During his welcome speech, Elmar Schmid expressed the desire of JRS management to raise awareness of the significant waste reduction potential in the disposal of cat litter residues. He is convinced that "JRS, with its plant-based future technology, can provide solutions to challenges of modern daily life," among many other areas.

JRS PETCARE, the JRS sales subsidiary for natural pet hygiene products, is a pioneer and market leader for ecological cat litter with its brand Cat's Best. Thanks to its natural plant fiber functionality and special manufacturing process, the plant-based litter requires significantly less material input, provides high performance in odor control and liquid absorption, and has a longer-lasting effect compared to conventional mineral-based litter.

The amount of waste generated by cat litter - with 15.2 million cats living in German households - is one of the largest individual contributors to waste in major cities. Mineral-based litter ultimately ends up as slag in landfills. "Many cat owners are not aware of how easy it is to do something good for the environment by using plant-based cat litter. The plant fiber litter is biodegradable in the natural material cycle, and when disposed of through waste incineration, it serves as a completely residue-free, CO2-neutral energy source, making a positive contribution," says Silvia Erbrich, Marketing Manager of JRS Petcare.

During the conversation, State Secretary Dr. Baumann and Member of the State Parliament Grath expressed their concern that this topic has apparently not received sufficient attention in waste policy so far. They also personally considered it a wake-up call. Therefore, they explicitly welcomed the information and pledged to further examine and support it in the political environment.

The discussions began with an overview of the JRS Group, the various applications of the 'green' JRS Plant Fiber Technology, and the wide range of plant-based raw materials used for it.

The globally operating JRS Group employs over 4,000 people at more than 90 production and distribution locations. The headquarters and main factory in Rosenberg-Holzmühle employ nearly 1,000 employees.
